Expanding Iconography > Syntax
Concept & Design, Written in Java + Processing

In the system of my icon, the descriptive symbol is smaller than the one being described. For example, in "library"—a container for books—the book is smaller than the container. Rather than a parallel combination, in which the symbols have equal weight, I layered symbols on top of each other to fit within the module and to create unified icons that can communicate the relative weight of each part of the concept.   I felt that there was an opportunity to manipulate library classification system because the categories of the system are abstract terms. I wanted to try to make iconography to depict abstract words and thoughts, rather than specific objects and form. I did research into the meaning of the categories, tracked and defined categories by myself. Then I dissected the concept of each category into smaller components to design symbols to represent each part.
